We
here at the Phi-Delta Zeta chapter of Lambda Chi
Alpha would like to dispel some common myths held
about fraternities.
Myth 1: Fraternities are all about conformity.
Contrary to this belief,
fraternities are actually about diversity. And
Lambda Chi Alpha, since it's an international
fraternity, has all kinds of opportunities for
making friends through our other chapters all
over the place. For example, not only are our
brothers welcome at other campuses, but Lambda
Chi Alpha holds Regional Conferences and International
Conventions.
Myth 2: Joining a fraternity hurts your GPA.
Did you know that there
is an actual requirement for brothers to be in
good academic standing? We check everyone's cumulative
GPA at the end of each semester. To attend our
socials you must be in good academic standing
for that semester. Feeling like you are falling
behind in your classes? Try some tutoring from
our older brothers who know the courses and the
professors.
In addition, statistically
speaking, fraternities give you that extra edge
in the real world. Although the total alumni of
all fraternities number less than 2% of the US
population, they make up 52% of our Senate, 33%
of our House of Representatives and 75% of the
top executives of the 500 largest business corporations.
Alumni also become a valuable resource in helping
a brother get a job.
Myth 3: Why would
someone pay for their friends?
No one can force friendships. It is still up to
you whether you participate in our socials and
other events. That's what rush week is for. We
just want you to make sure that you can get along
with us all. We also offer you the chance to try
out all the fraternities here at UMBC.
As for the money part, well, every major organization
has membership dues that cover the work of running
it. Also, it works out in the end because you
get group discounts for events with your membership.
Don't think of them as dues so much as a cover
charge for a whole years worth of parties paid
in advance.
Believe it or not, we
are here to help each other get through college
alive. We are here to help make these the best
years of your life.
Myth 4: Brothers are very cliquey.
Just participating in a fraternity gives you a
chance to learn the value of teamwork, to learn
leadership by doing, and to develop a sense of
responsibility by taking it on. Fine-tune your
professional skills and improve your organization,
motivation to follow-through, and building speaking
and presentation skills. Just like your real family,
we give you the opportunity to learn from the
advice and experiences of the older brothers.
We are even there for you when you need a place
to go for help with your problems.
One last note: Fraternities
bring with them, tradition, heritage, and a group
with which to identify and of which to be proud.
